Urban farming on Jaskółcza Island - our graduate's award-winning project 07.06.2023 10:41

This year’s Prof. Leszek T. Dąbrowski prize for the best master's thesis from Szczecin branch of the Association of Polish Architects was awarded to Katarzyna Lechowska's project prepared under the supervision of Professor Krzysztof Bizio.

The proposal of the ZUT architecture graduate is to develop Jaskółcza Island in the spirit of climate education and ecology. The educational centre, which promotes the idea of alternative agriculture in the city, together with the catering zone in the former transformer station and the surrounding pedestrian platform, is intended by the designer to be an enclave on the island offering a place of respite from the hustle and bustle of the city and the sea of concrete.

The ground floor of the centre will provide space for, among other things, two-storey aeroponic cultivation, temporary exhibitions, and lectures. The upstairs education centre will include an exhibition zone with exhibition rooms (algae farming, insect farming, aero and aquaponic farming, sustainable development, water recycling) and a projection room. A workshop-laboratory zone is to be used for the practical application of knowledge gained from visiting the exhibition. The last floor of the facility is occupied by public gardens on the roof with sanitary facilities and workshop space.

In the transformer station building, the designer introduced an open consumer room located on the ground and first floors. In the central part of the building is a tall stand of vertical aeroponic cultivation, the fruits of which would be used in the kitchen.
