The idea of the "Insect Days" or the Bug's Bowl Festival was born in Lafayette in the USA. Its creator was Professor Tom Turpin from Purdue University. In Poland, the idea of the "Bug's Bowl" was taken over by Professor Kazimierz Wiech from the University of Agriculture in Krakow, who initiated the Polish "Insect Days" in 2000. The "Insect Day" was first organised in Szczecin on 8th June 2010 at the Faculty of Environmental Management and Agriculture of the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin. At the moment, we are organising the 10th anniversary edition of this educational event!
As a part of the "Insect Day", we are organising an exhibition of local and exotic live insects. The terrarium collection also includes: spiders, scorpions, beetles, stick insects, stink bugs and cockroaches as well as frogs. We are also preparing a lepidopterrarium - a special room - a house for exotic butterflies, which you may enter and observe their behaviour. Our beekeeper friends will reveal the secrets of bee life in a beehive. The presenters will talk about how insects pollinate and why their biodiversity is declining. Our students will present a collection of insects living in symbiosis with humans as well as live insects from all over the world. For experienced entomologists we propose a competition entitled "What kind of insect is it?". For dessert we offer a historical meeting with WILHELM MEYER - an architect, urban planner and ... entomologist, presented at a photographic exhibition.
